I wanted to quickly address a few of my most frequently asked questions when it comes to in home lifestyle newborn photography sessions. Keep in mind I will have a ton more info for you post booking, but if there is anything else you’d like to know prior to booking your session I am here to help you, just ask!
What exactly is an in home lifestyle newborn photography session?
Typically this session takes place during babies first two weeks of life (more on that here). We will capture all the tiny details of baby and showcase the deep new bond between your family and your newest addition, all within the comfort of your own home! During this session I will capture your baby and family naturally as well as lightly posed. This could look like baby laying independently in his/her crib, or on a special quilt or decorative ottoman. The beauty of being in your own element allows for so much flexibility and creativity. These sessions can typically take anywhere between 1.5-2 hours.
Do I need a nursery?
This is such a common question! We will utilize the most naturally lit areas of your home to photograph in- whether thats your living room, master bedroom or nursery! I’ve even shot in sibling’s rooms once or twice because their rooms had the best lighting. Natural light from windows and sliding glass doors are ideal. So no, you don’t need a nursery- but if you have one, I will make sure to include detail shots of all your hard work.
How should I prepare my house?
First of all let me reassure you, the absolute last thing on my mind being newly postpartum was cleaning. So please do not feel the need to deep clean your entire house before I come. Instead, if you could focus more on decluttering items off your counters and floors in the 1-2 spaces you anticipate on photographing in- keeping in mind we need the spaces with the most natural light. Do me a favor and open your blinds/curtains so I can assess the best lighting scenarios when I arrive.
I’ve been known to move a chair or two, to utilize the best spaces so don’t worry I got you!
Bonus: if you have a neutral colored comforter please have it on your bed. If you don’t have one, no worries, just let me know and I will bring a white one with me! I like to use a bed for those snuggly shots everyone loves.
Is there anything else I should know before my session?
I want you to really enjoy this time with your family and have it be as stress-free as possible. I have structured my sessions to be baby-led. We will have plenty of time for feeds and changes and anything else that may arise during your session, taking breaks as needed. I always encourage parents to prepare older siblings as best as possible. Hype them up, let them know what we’ll be doing, and establish a reward for when the session is over.
What should I wear for my lifestyle newborn session? What about baby?
I stand by the sentiment that when mom feels beautiful it shows and now more than ever is that true. Your body just went through hell and back brining a baby into this world. Your comfort while healing your body is what should determine what you wear. Loose flowy dresses are a fan favorite around here. If your nursing, there are a lot of great nursing friendly options as well. Being in home is much more of a natural, relaxed environment where you’ll likely be barefoot.
Most of the regular family session style advice to selecting outfits still applies to your lifestyle newborn session- stick with neutrals, avoid large prints, patterns and graphics just to name a few. Don’t worry, I’ve got you- I provide a style guide as well as hands on help selecting outfits for my clients.
For baby it’s important to remember that less, is more. I have a variety of swaddles and bows for baby, but in addition to that you may want baby’s own special swaddle, bow or hat. A neutral romper or onesie is also always a great addition if you want something other than a swaddle. Check out Caden Lane for personalized name swaddles and hats, these are my fav!
